Your First Visit

What to Expect at Stuart Steven Dental Practice in Edinburgh

Book An Initial Assessment With Our Team

At your first visit you will be welcomed to the practice by the reception team and given a Welcome Pack which will give you information about the practice, treatments offered and any special offers currently running.

You will be given a New Patient Questionnaire to complete prior to seeing the dentist.

This will require you to complete your correct contact details, medical and health/social history, your previous dental experience and your expectations.

If you are registering as an NHS patient you will be required to complete whether or not you are exempt from NHS charges at end of the questionnaire.

You will be seen by your new dentist who will go over your New Patient Questionnaire with you. Confidentially discussing your medical history and any concerns about your teeth/mouth.

The dentist will take note of all your present teeth and any existing treatment visible.

If appropriate Bitewing radiographs may be taken to let the dentist check teeth/bone levels that are not visible to the eye.

The dentist will conduct a thorough Dental Health check of your teeth and mouth.

You will be advised of the health of your teeth and mouth and if any treatment is required.

If you require any dental treatment the different options and costs will always be discussed with you.

Once a treatment plan has been finalised you will be given a paper or electronic copy for your records. This will include an estimate of the costs.

If a treatment plan is over £350 you will be asked to agree and sign a copy to be retained in practice for our records.

Most patients should visit the dentist every 6 months.
However, depending on your oral health, your dentist may recommend more frequent appointments—such as every 3–9 months—to monitor specific conditions like gum disease or tooth wear.

Regular visits help detect issues early, keep your teeth and gums healthy, and reduce the need for more complex treatment.

Your first appointment usually includes:

  1. A full oral health assessment
We examine your teeth, gums, soft tissues, bite, and existing dental work.

  2. X‑rays (if needed)
These help us see areas not visible during a visual exam.

  3. Discussion of any concerns
Pain, sensitivity, cosmetic goals—anything you’d like us to focus on.

  4. Personalised treatment plan
We explain any recommended treatments, costs, and next steps.

  5. A hygiene assessment
We’ll advise on cleaning techniques and may book a hygiene visit if required.

This appointment is relaxed and designed to help us understand your dental needs.
